| BASIC SAFETY |
| Because the bow is no longer used as a weapon of war, the general public seem to be
under the impression that they are no longer dangerous. Whilst modern bows are much
lighter to pull than those of our medieval counterparts, they are extremely efficient
and every bit as dangerous. Because of this, extreme care is taken regarding safety precautions and the Field Captain is in charge of all aspects of shooting to ensure safety standards are maintained. The following principles are always adhered to: 1. No archer will ever loose an arrow until the Field Captain has blown the whistle to signal the all-clear to shoot (one blow of the whistle). This means he has checked that all archers are back from their targets and the field is clear. 2. No archer will cross the shooting line to score their arrows at the target until the Field Captain has blown the whistle (two blows of the whistle). This means that he has checked that all archers really have finished shooting and that it is safe to cross the shooting line and walk towards the targets. 3. No archer will ever draw up his bow, with or without an arrow, until he is on the shooting line. Even then, he must only draw his bow in the direction of the targets. 4. All archers will immediately stop shooting when hearing the call FAST. This means a situation has arisen that may cause danger to life or property. Even if an archer can see the trouble is at the other end of the shooting line, he must still stop all shooting until the Field Captain signals that the shooting can recommence. Because these simple rules and precautions are in use every time archers meet, whether in tournaments, practice or training, accidents never happen in archery. |
